Addicted?

10 Nov

I read an article this morning that cited a new study on teens and media devices. The study tried to get 1,000 college students to unplug from all types of media for one entire day. Sounds pretty easy, doesn’t it? But the majority of the students couldn’t do it! They said it made them feel “depressed, anxious, and lonely.”

My question today is: what are you addicted to? Is there anything in your life that, if you didn’t have it for one day, you couldn’t cope?

Lots of outlets promise happiness & fulfillment (friends, media, alcohol, drugs, romantic love), but they cannot deliver. Only God can meet our deepest needs and fulfill us completely.

I love Psalm 63 where David expresses his sincere need for God, the One who truly satisfies.

Jesus said, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:28-29)

So when you’re needing rest for your soul, instead of immediately reaching for your phone or iPad, try spending some time with Jesus. He’s waiting for you! Read a few verses, pray, worship…just take a few minutes in His presence. There’s a peace and power you’ll find in Him that media devices can’t provide. When you get what you really need from Him, you can enjoy your phone or leave it home. Either way, you’re okay.

Much love,

Lisa

Thanks for this comment, Shari! I love your phrase: “the great filling that God has for them.” I pray we all experience that more than ever!
